Hi Book Club Members:
Are you looking for something different than what’s offered on the top seller’s list?
If you’re drawn to stories about immigrant experiences, intergenerational trauma, mother-daughter conflict, abuse and healing, cultural displacement, identity, and self-worth, you may connect deeply with Kintsugi: A Woman — a multi-layered work of auto-fiction.
This is the honest story of a woman who carried shame and silence for decades while protecting her abuser. Sent alone to Canada at four years old, she learned early how to survive. Her journey unfolds from childhood into her sixties, through heartbreak, resilience, loss, healing, and self-discovery.
Told through a feminist lens with rich cultural insight, this story explores what it means to reclaim one’s voice after a lifetime of hiding.
You may see parts of yourself in her story—or simply be moved by her journey.
If your book club is located within Vancouver’s Lower Mainland, I have book club sets available to borrow. I will deliver and pick them up free of charge. My only request is that members leave a review on Amazon.ca or Goodreads.
Here are some discussion themes for your book club after reading Kintsugi: A Woman:
- What was your first memory?
- Who was your first love?
- What was your first job? And what did you buy with your first paycheque?
- Who were your elementary school friends? Do you still know them today?
- Have you ever felt unworthy? Why? What did you do about it?
- Are you or someone you know an immigrant? And what was his/her/their first impression? What were the challenges? What were surprises or unexpected interactions, experiences, or anything that made an impression?
- Nature vs. Nurture. Have you ever known someone with a unique creative talent who gave it up for a job they hated to pay the bills? Did your parents guide you away from what you dreamed of doing?
- Although corporal punishment was banned in BC schools beginning in 1973 and later prohibited in all institutions by 2004, it remains legal in private homes. One of the main arguments against a full ban is that it would infringe on parental rights and the privacy of the family—specifically, the right of parents to decide how to discipline their children behind closed doors. Can a spank escalate into something else?
- Think of an uncomfortable situation you’ve been in. How did you handled yourself?
- How would you know if you were in a toxic relationship?
- The protagonist went hiking into forests to find emotional peace. Name an activity or something you’d do for emotional or mental well-being?
- 12. Have you ever read The Four Agreements? If so, what do you think? If not, name another book you’ve read that think promotes emotional health and positivity?
